Message from the President
Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business,
professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary provide humanitarian
service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and
help build goodwill and peace in the world. As the Union City Rotary
Club celebrates its 75th anniversary, the Club continues to advance
the ideal of "Service Above Self".
The defining service project of the Union City Rotary Club since
1982 has been and continues to be our scholarship program. In its
30th year of funding scholarships to local high school seniors and
college students, the Union City Rotary Club has now awarded scholarships
in excess of $4,000,000. In an effort to help build goodwill and
peace in the world, our Club has begun to sponsor "Rotary Abroad",
a program that provides an all expense paid tour of several European
countries for upcoming seniors from Union City High School, Obion
County Central High School and South Fulton High School. The Union
City Rotary Club continues to fund its "Reading Railroad Program",
which is the local arm of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, ensuring
that each child in Obion County from birth to age five receives
an age-appropriate book monthly. Additionally, the Union City Rotary
Club is charged with the oversight of the board of the Promethean
Foundation, a program established by the Robert and Jenny Kirkland
Foundation, which provides scholarships for pre-school education
for more than 300 eligible children in Obion County. The Union City
Rotary Club also governs and administers the Obion County Distinguished
Speakers Foundation, which is designed to attract renowned speakers
that will be of great benefit to our community by enlightening us
on national and international affairs. To conclude, the Union City
Rotary Relays is the State's longest running annual invitational
track meet, providing a first class venue for regional high school
athletes to showcase their athletic talents.
As the Union City Rotary Club embarks on its next 75 years, it is
my pledge to preserve the heritage of our Club, as well as its commitment
to our community. As we now face an uncertain economic future in
Obion County, the members of the Union City Rotary Club will no
doubt be among the leaders to meet the impending challenges facing
our community. In order to meet these challenges, Union City Rotarians
will once again exercise "Service Above Self".
Sincerely,
Al Creswell
2011-2012 President
